Open Workshop “Use of ESPON by European Institutions and Commission Services”
In cooperation with the European Commission DG Regio, the ESPON Programme has organised a Workshop creating awareness of ESPON results supporting their use in policymaking at European level. The event took place in Bruxelles on 6 May 2009 at the European Commission CSM2 (Auditorium).
The workshop welcomed a mix of officials and policymakers working in European Institutions and regions for discussing recent ESPON results on trends in accessibility, migration as well as spatial scenarios and the position of Europe in the world. The workshop illustrated that the introduction of the territorial dimension in European policy can help in finding new development paths for regions. Many policymakers therefore look forward to the results of the new projects under the ESPON 2013 Programme.
Researchers involved in ESPON presented results from ESPON 2006 projects and gave a first insight of recent progress under the ESPON 2013 Programme. The morning session provoked a lively discussion on changing territorial patterns of accessibility and demographic trends in Europe that focused much on the question what are good investments helping regions to develop. The afternoon session, which focused on spatial scenarios for Europe and the position of the Europe in the world, showed that some paradigms on regional development are to be reflected for some parts of the European territory.
Please find below the presentations given during the event as well as the Workshop Report.
